The arts community in Western New England survived the COVID-19 pandemic, and although some companies and productions were “leaner and meaner” than in pre-pandemic times, the quantity and quality of area productions was outstanding.
There were several new leaders amongst area theaters. Alan Paul, a young director from the Shakespeare Theatre Company, with multiple awards on the Washington, D.C., theater scene, was named artistic director at Barrington Stage Company, replacing the retiring co-founder Julianne Boyd, who started the theater in a high school in Sheffield and turned it into a thriving multi-theater complex in Pittsfield. Local actors and directors Tara Franklin and James Barry were named co-directors of Chester Theatre Company, replacing Daniel Elihu Kramer, who stepped down to become chair of Smith College’s theater department.
