Grab a mint julep and a festive hat because it’s time for The Kentucky Derby! The 149th running of ‘the fasted two minutes in sports’ takes place on May 6, and despite the cloudy weather in the forecast, the stars are coming out for this epic event.
The springtime extravaganza always draws a huge crowd to Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky – 170,000 capacity. Among the throng of watchers are some of the biggest celebrities from the sports, music, television, and entertainment world. All come to see which horse will walk away a winner – and which lucky bettor made the right call.
Taking place on the first Saturday in May, the Kentucky Derby caps a two-week-long festival. The race, one of many taking place today, puts three-year-old Thoroughbred horses to the test. Trainers, jockeys, and owners all hope that their horse will win and go on to complete the Triple Crown in horse racing: The Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. There have been two Triple Crown winners in the past decade – American Pharoah in 2015, and Justify in 2018.
