New York Attorney General Letitia James is asking the judge overseeing Donald Trump’s civil-fraud trial to hit the former president with more than $370 million in penalties for inflating his net worth by billions of dollars to obtain favorable terms on bank loans and insurance policies.
James, a Democrat, had previously sought financial penalties of $250 million as part of her lawsuit accusing Trump of overvaluing his real estate, including his flagship Manhattan building, the Trump Tower, his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and his golf courses. In a filing Friday, her office said that evidence and testimony introduced in the trial showed that Trump, his company and top executives intended to commit fraud and reaped hundreds of millions of dollars in ill-gotten gains.
