United Nations member states have voted to remove Iran from a panel that promotes women’s rights around the world, backing a resolution introduced by the United States.
The resolution passed with 29 votes in favor of ousting Iran and eight votes against. Sixteen countries abstained.
The Biden administration had spent weeks lobbying other countries to support the measure as part of its pressure campaign against the Islamist regime in Tehran following its crackdown on protests following the September death of a young woman detained by Iran’s “morality police.”
